The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) has adopted a new Strategic Plan to guide its work over the next three years. Building on the progress achieved through previous strategic plans, the new plan positions CRPO to respond to an evolving regulatory environment while remaining firmly focused on its public protection mandate. The principles of diversity, equity and inclusion will no longer be advanced through stand-alone initiatives. Instead, they will be embedded throughout the College’s governance, regulatory and operational work through an integrated focus on equity, accessibility and cultural safety. This focus will ensure the principles become part of how decisions are made, policies are developed, and the public interest is served.

The Strategic Plan is centred on three Strategic Outcomes.

Strategic Plan 2027-2030

Three Strategic Outcomes

Regulatory Excellence

Regulatory Excellence focuses on ensuring that Registered Psychotherapists continue to practise safely, ethically and competently through fair, transparent and evidence-informed regulation. Over the life of the plan, CRPO will continue to strengthen registration, quality assurance and professional conduct processes while ensuring that regulatory requirements remain rigorous, proportionate and responsive to emerging practice issues.

Modern Governance

Modern Governance reflects the College’s commitment to strengthening governance structures, accountability and leadership capacity. Building on work already underway, CRPO will continue to modernize its governance model through clearer governance roles, competency-based appointments, stronger succession planning and stronger use of evidence to support strategic decision-making. Governance modernization will occur in deliberate phases while maintaining a clear focus on public protection.

Public Trust

Public Trust recognizes that confidence in the profession and its regulator is earned through fair, transparent and accountable regulation. The College will continue to strengthen communication, engagement and collaboration with registrants, applicants, government, system partners and the public while demonstrating accountability through meaningful reporting and ongoing evaluation.

The Strategic Plan is guided by three Foundational Commitments that shape every aspect of the College’s work. These commitments are not separate priorities. Rather, they describe how CRPO will achieve its Strategic Outcomes.

  • Evidence-Informed Decision-Making ensures that decisions are guided by data, research, evaluation and a right-touch, risk-based approach to regulation.
  • Equity, Accessibility and Cultural Safety are integrated throughout governance, policy development and regulatory decision-making to support fair, inclusive and responsive regulation.
  • Engagement, Communication and Continuous Improvement reinforce the College’s commitment to listening, learning, collaboration and transparency.

The Strategic Plan is supported by a Strategic Implementation and Governance Pathway, which translates Council’s strategic direction into phased implementation activities over the next 12 months, 18 to 24 months and the longer-term future. Together, these documents provide a clear line of sight from Council’s strategic direction to implementation, organizational planning and continuous improvement.

Throughout the implementation of this Strategic Plan, CRPO will remain focused on its core purpose: protecting the public by ensuring that Registered Psychotherapists practise safely, ethically and competently while maintaining public confidence in the profession and its regulator.
