CRPO is in the process of developing guidance on the legal frameworks for psychedelic-assisted therapy.
In the meantime, here are some general principles to consider. They are drawn from CRPO’s existing standards. Registrants would need to apply clinical and professional judgment in applying these to their specific situation:
- Only practising authorized controlled acts, e.g., RPs are not authorized to prescribe medication, give advice about medication or communicate a diagnosis (https://www.crpo.ca/standard-1-4/).
- Not in possession of illegal substances or being involved with obtaining illegal drug or pharmaceutical products (https://www.crpo.ca/standard-1-5/).
- Not practising while the RP is impaired (https://www.crpo.ca/standard-1-5/).
- Acting within the RP’s area of competence (https://www.crpo.ca/competence/).
- Collaborating with others on the care team (https://www.crpo.ca/3-3-communicating-client-care/).
Finally, when considering expanding your competence in any area, we would encourage registrants to review Standard 2.1: Seeking Consultation, Clinical Supervision, and Referral.
